Alan Letang Bio

Alan Letang is a former professional ice hockey defenceman turned coach. He is a dual citizen (Canadian-Croatian) with a 20-year playing career spanning North America and Europe, followed by extensive coaching experience in junior hockey, international programs, and now in Germany.

Playing Career

Drafted in the 8th round (203rd overall) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Letang played junior hockey in major Canadian leagues:

  • OHL: Cornwall Royals (1991–92), Newmarket Royals (1992–94), Sarnia Sting (1994–95).

He turned pro in 1995, appearing in 14 NHL games with the Dallas Stars (1999–00), Calgary Flames (2001–02), and New York Islanders (2002–03). His pro career included AHL stints (Fredericton Canadiens, Saint John Flames, Bridgeport Sound Tigers) and extensive European play in leagues like the DEL (Germany: Kaufbeurer Adler, Augsburger Panther, Hamburg Freezers, Nürnberg Ice Tigers), NLA (Switzerland: SCL Tigers, EV Zug), IHL (Michigan K-Wings, Utah Grizzlies), EBEL/Austrian League (HC TWK Innsbruck, KHL Medveščak Zagreb), and more.

He retired in 2014 after captaining KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the EBEL (notable 2009–10 season: 10 goals, 19 assists in 50 games, leading defencemen in points and advancing to playoffs). He also represented Canada's national team in 1998–99.

Coaching Career

Letang transitioned immediately to coaching, staying with KHL Medveščak Zagreb as an assistant coach (2014–16).

Returning to Canada in 2016, he joined the OHL:

  • Assistant coach, Owen Sound Attack (2016–19).
  • Promoted to head coach (interim in January 2019, later permanent).

In 2021, he became head coach of the Sarnia Sting (where he had played junior), leading them to their first Western Conference final in team history in 2023. His overall OHL record with the Sting was 121-136-21-14 (.474 points percentage) over four-plus seasons. He was relieved of duties in November 2025 amid a slow start (team at 6-10-3-1).

Internationally with Hockey Canada, Letang has been highly successful:

  • Assistant coach: 2020 and 2023 IIHF World Juniors (gold medals), 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup (gold).
  • Head coach: 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup (gold), 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship (Canada reached quarterfinals).

In February 2026, he was hired as head coach of the Blue Devils Weiden in Germany's DEL2 (second-tier professional league), marking his return to German hockey circles where he played earlier in his career.
